Help Ferguson Families.
Like many of you, we were devastated by the events that led up to the riots in Ferguson as well as the aftermath and the impact on the community and the nation. And, yet, when we reflect on them, while they were unplanned, they could not have been entirely unanticipated. When you live in a community where poverty rates are in the double digits, where crime and exploitation are routine, you become numb. But feelings of hopelessness build and, as we saw in Ferguson, can explode. Immediate help was obviously needed and, we know that so many people and businesses joined together to bring stability back to Ferguson. But we also wanted to make a difference beyond just immediate crisis stabilization.
We will be joining with Eagle Point Management to launch a new site at Northwinds Apartments. You may recognize the name, it is the apartment community where Michael Brown lived and is the first step in making a long-term difference in Ferguson. The partnership will help address not only the community's critical needs, but also, through a dedicated service coordinator, will provide long-term services and systems to empower people to live better lives and move towards self-sufficiency while ensuring that their voices will be heard.
But to make this dream a reality, we need your help. Together, we can redefine low-income housing communities by creating a stable foundation where low-income families, seniors and people with special needs can reach their full potential, while they are supported by practical programs such as health classes, financial education, employment initiatives, parenting and after-school programs for children.
The future starts here.
Together, we can ensure that Ferguson is not a symbol of what is wrong, but rather of what can be.
